For people working in Romania on a permit · 4 minutes

Four dates decide what you are allowed to do. Most people are working from the wrong ones.

The rules are not complicated, but they hang off registered dates that are not the dates you remember — not the day you arrived, not your last day at work. Put the right ones in and this works out where you stand.

This is arithmetic, not advice. It applies the rules as they have stood since 27 April 2026. It cannot know your contract, and it cannot tell you what to do — but knowing the date is usually what is missing.

As registered in REGES-ONLINE — not the day you arrived, and not your first day on site if that was recorded later.

Also the registered date. If this is your first job in Romania it may be the same as above.

Leave empty if you are still employed. This is the registration date, not your last day at work — they are often not the same.

Read it off the card itself. This date can override everything below.

Fill in the dates above and this fills itself in. Nothing you type leaves your phone.

What each clock actually is

Seasonal worker? This calculator is not for you. Seasonal work runs under its own rules: your total stay as a seasonal worker is capped at 180 days in any 365, and taking a new job with another employer is possible only while that maximum is not used up. The dates below would mislead you — use the guide linked at the bottom of this page instead.

You do not have to guess the registered dates. Log in at reges.inspectiamuncii.ro (website or the REGES mobile app) and you can see every contract registered against your CNP — start date, changes, and the registered end — and download an extract. If what you see there is wrong, you can flag it to the employer from inside the same system.

Six months — before you can move to another employer

You may resign and change employer once you have been at least six months with your current one, counted from the day your work with them was registered in REGES-ONLINE. You do not need their permission.

This period can be shortened where the employer has seriously breached your contract or your working conditions. That is a judgement someone else makes, not a box you tick — but if wages are unpaid or conditions are unsafe, it is worth raising rather than waiting out the six months in silence.

Two years — before you can approach employers directly

If a placement agency brought you here, then after the six months and until two years from the day you started working in Romania, a move normally goes through that agency. After two years you can go to an authorised employer yourself.

These two clocks do not start on the same day. The six months runs from starting with this employer. The two years runs from starting work in Romania at all. If you have changed jobs, they are different dates — and mixing them up is the easiest mistake to make here.

Ninety days — after your job ends

If your work ends before your permit expires, your right to stay does not end that day. It continues for up to 90 days from the day the ending was registered — or for as long as you receive unemployment benefit, if you do. Sign a new contract inside that window and your permit runs to its normal expiry again.

It cannot outlast the permit itself. If the card expires sooner, the card wins.
