Nobody screams. That's the part everyone gets wrong.

Almost everything films and television taught us about drowning is false. There is no shouting, no waving, no thrashing — a drowning person cannot call for help, because the mouth is at the waterline and every bit of air is needed for breathing. It looks like someone quietly treading water, and it lasts twenty to sixty seconds. That is why children drown a few metres from attentive parents, at parties, in daylight, in silence.

The one sentence worth remembering: a child making noise in water is breathing. A quiet child in water needs a hand on them now. Silence is the emergency signal, not the reassurance.

Twenty seconds

Everyone believes they would notice. The honest test is how long twenty seconds actually is — the time it takes to answer a message, find the sunscreen, or finish a sentence with someone. Press the button and don't look away.

Twenty seconds is the upper end for an adult. A small child can be under in as little as twenty — and unconscious within a minute of that.

What it looks like — and what it doesn't

The exception that confuses people: before true drowning begins, a swimmer in trouble can still call out and wave — that's "aquatic distress", and it's your best chance to help. Once the silence starts, the window is seconds. So respond to both: the person calling for help, and the person who has gone quiet.

Supervision that actually works

Drownings around families almost never happen because nobody cared. They happen because everyone assumed someone else was watching, in a crowd where responsibility was shared and therefore held by no one.

  1. Name a water watcher, out loud. One adult, by name, with one job. Not "we're all keeping an eye out" — that reliably means nobody is.
  2. Hand over the shift explicitly. "You're watching now" and an acknowledgement, every 15–20 minutes. Attention degrades faster than people believe.
  3. Phone away while on duty. Reading one message costs the whole window. So does a conversation you have to think about.
  4. Within arm's reach for small children — close enough to touch, in and around any water, including paddling pools and baths.
  5. Count heads on a schedule. At intervals, physically find every child. In a busy pool or lake, "I saw them a minute ago" is not a location.
  6. Layers, not a single defence. Fences and self-closing gates around pools, a proper fitted lifejacket for boats and open water, swimming lessons — each one catches what the others miss.
Inflatable armbands and floaty toys are not safety equipment. They keep a child upright until they slip off, deflate or tip — and they teach a false vertical posture. For real protection in open water or on a boat, use a certified lifejacket that fits, with a crotch strap for small children.

If someone is drowning: reach, throw, row — don't go

The most common way one drowning becomes two is a rescuer entering the water. A panicking person will climb onto anything buoyant, including you, and untrained rescuers are pushed under. This is how parents die alongside the children they went in for.

In order

  • Shout for help and get someone to call 112 — say "someone is drowning" and give the location.
  • Reach: hold something out from a stable position — a branch, a paddle, a towel, a jacket. Lie flat and keep your centre of gravity low.
  • Throw: anything buoyant, even without a rope — a lifebuoy, a cooler lid, a football, an empty jerry can. Something to hold gives them minutes.
  • Row: use a boat, board or pool float if one is right there.
  • Talk: keep shouting instructions — "grab it", "float on your back". A voice reduces panic and panic is what drowns people.

Only go in if

  • You are trained, and you take something buoyant with you to keep between you and them.
  • Otherwise: don't. An extra body in the water usually means an extra casualty, and it removes the one person who could still direct the rescue.
  • Never dive head-first into unknown water — depth and obstacles are invisible from above, and spinal injuries turn a rescue into two emergencies.
Once they're out and not breathing normally: start CPR, and call 112. Drowning is an oxygen problem, so breaths matter more here than in a sudden cardiac arrest. If you are able and willing, give rescue breaths as well as chest compressions — otherwise do compressions and let the dispatcher guide you. Doing something imperfectly beats waiting.

Cold water: the first minute is the dangerous one

Cold water kills strong swimmers, and almost never by hypothermia. What kills is the first shock: an involuntary gasp, then rapid uncontrolled breathing, then panic — and if your face is under during that gasp, you inhale water. Rivers, lakes, quarries and the sea stay dangerously cold long after the air turns warm.

1 minute — cold shock. Don't try to swim. Float: lean back, head back, ears in the water, arms and legs spread, let your lungs hold you up. Wait for the gasping to pass.
10 minutes — meaningful movement. Your hands and limbs still work well enough to swim to safety or hold something. Use this window deliberately.
1 hour — before hypothermia is likely to make you unconscious. Longer than most people think, which is why floating and being found still works.

Float first, then act. The instinct is to thrash toward the edge immediately, and that instinct drowns people in the first sixty seconds. Fight the water later; float now.

Rip currents: never fight the water

How to spot one

  • A gap in the breaking waves — a calm-looking channel between areas of white water. That calm is the danger, not the safety.
  • Discoloured, churning or foamy water moving out to sea, sometimes carrying sand or debris.
  • Ripples on the surface where the water around is smooth.

If it takes you

  • Don't swim against it. A rip is faster than an Olympic swimmer; fighting it exhausts you and exhaustion is what drowns.
  • Float and stay calm — a rip pulls you out, not under.
  • Swim parallel to the shore to leave the channel, then angle in with the waves.
  • Can't escape? Keep floating, raise one arm and shout. You will be carried out beyond the breakers, where the current dissipates.

And the boring prevention that works: swim where there are lifeguards, between the flags if there are flags, and never alone. Most drownings happen away from supervised areas.

Ice, alcohol, and the two quiet killers

Alcohol

A large share of adult and teenage drownings involve alcohol. It impairs judgement about distance and cold, blunts the coordination that rescue requires, and encourages exactly the behaviour that kills — jumping into unknown water, swimming out to prove something, swimming alone at night. If you're drinking, stay dry; if you're supervising children, stay sober.

After a struggle in the water

"Dry drowning" and "secondary drowning" are not recognised medical diagnoses, and the popular stories about a child dying hours later from a swallow of water are misleading. But breathing water in does cause real, treatable lung problems. So: if someone had a genuine struggle or came out coughing, watch them. Persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain, extreme fatigue, vomiting or confusion in the following 24 hours means get medical help — not because of a mystery syndrome, but because their lungs may need treatment.

"I can swim" is not a safety plan

Most people who drown could swim. Competence in a pool is a poor predictor of survival in open water, because almost everything that matters is different — and the confidence transfers even though the skill doesn't.

What a pool gives you

  • Warm, still, clear water
  • A visible bottom and a known depth
  • An edge within a few strokes, everywhere
  • No current, no waves, no wind
  • Usually a lifeguard, and always an audience

What open water gives you

  • Cold that steals your breath and then your grip
  • Currents that outswim you, and wind that pushes you out
  • Distances that look half what they are across water
  • Weeds, mud, submerged branches, sudden drop-offs
  • Nobody watching, and no edge for hundreds of metres
The specific trap: a competent pool swimmer decides to swim to the buoy, the far bank, the moored boat. Halfway there the cold arrives, the return distance is now twice as long as the distance already swum, and there is no edge to grab. Strong swimmers drown further from shore than weak ones — that's the whole difference their skill made.

The one thing worth more than everything above

Everything on this page is damage control. The intervention that actually removes the risk is learning to swim — and it is unevenly distributed in a way that quietly decides who drowns. Children whose parents can't swim usually don't learn either, and the risk passes down a generation intact.
